THE ORIGINS OF DW-5600
G-SHOCK was born from a single belief that there could be a watch that would not break. Formed to handle its development, Project Team Tough constructed over 200 prototypes for performance testing and spent over two years developing the structure and improving the parts. An unimaginable process of trial and error was repeated continuously until 1983, when the shock-resistant structure that is still G-SHOCK’s core technology was finally completed.
Four years later, the G-SHOCK DW-5600 was introduced. The G-SHOCK DW-5600 series is described as the final model to feature a full metal case and screw-back.
Ever since the launch of the model in 1987, the G-SHOCK DW-5600 continued to evolve, adapting to the ever-changing demands of technology – all while retaining its traditional square face design.
The G-SHOCK DW-5600 boasts a range of technical specs including an illuminated panel, 20 bar water resistance and a multifunctional alarm, to name a few. Other features to highlight are a tough, mineral glass protector and an even tougher, shock resistant construction that you can count on.
Further innovative features found in the timepiece include a solar charging system that converts multiple sources of light into power that lasts up to 2 years, as well as an impressive GPS hybrid waveceptor which enables the watch to tell the time accurately, anywhere.
The G-SHOCK DW-5600 is the longest selling shock resistant model. Its shock-resistant structure is due to four features exclusive to G-SHOCK watches:
1. Hollow Structure
Inspired by the inside of a ball, the inner module is supported minimally inside the case which allows the module to “float”. This combined with shock-resistant material such as urethane allows the device to withstand impact when dropped.
2. Shock-Resistant Case
The watch owes much of its shock resistance to its 3D design and protruding case. This, combined with the structure of the bezel and its hardy mineral glass protector provide the buttons and glass with an extra shield.
3. Cushioning material
The interior of the watch is protected by a cushioning material to prevent operational errors and damage should the watch be subjected to a fall.
4. Curved band shape
The secret to the toughness of the G-SHOCK DW-5600 lies in the curved shape of its band. Its unique structure ensures that the vulnerable back of the watch will not touch the floor when dropped.
Over time, improvements have been made to the functionality, quality, graphics and design of the DW-5600. The introduction of color resin in 1992 meant that the watch was no longer confined to its traditional black colorway, giving customers greater variety to choose from. Functional improvements such as the incorporation of stronger light functions in 1996 and Bluetooth technology in 2012 only served to make the DW-5600 better than ever before.
THE DW-5600 TODAY
The G-SHOCK DW-5600 has become synonymous with the idea of absolute toughness, from its protective bezel to its shock and water resistant qualities – creating a timepiece that’s tough to break.
-
EL Backlight
An electro-luminescent panel causes the entire face to glow for easy reading. lncludes an After-Glow feature that keeps the EL backlight turned on for a few seconds after the light button is released
-
Multi-Function Alarm, Hourly Time Signal
Multi-function alarms can be configured to sound on a particular date, a particular day of the week, or at the same time each day. The number indicates the number of alarms. The hourly time signal causes the watch to beep every hour on the hour
-
Stopwatch (1/100 24HR)
Accurate measurement of elapsed time with the touch of a button. The fraction indicates the unit of measurement, while the time figure indicates the maximum time measurement
-
Timer (REPEAT 24H)
Counts down from a start time specified by you. The value indicates the number of timers available, while the time figure indicates the maximum starting time. “REPEAT” indicates Auto Repeat, which automatically restarts timing at the end of each countdown
-
Full Auto-Calendar
Allowances are made automatically for months of different lengths, including leap year
-
12/24-Hour Timekeeping
Times can be displayed in either 12-hour or 24-hour format
-
Shock Resistant
Shock-resistant construction protects against impact and vibration
-
Water Resistant (20 BAR)
The “BAR” value indicates the number of atmospheres to which water resistance is ensured. 20 BAR means water resistance to 20 atmospheres. Watches marked “200m” have the same water resistance as 20 BAR watches
-
Mineral Glass
Hard glass resists scratching
-
