THE TRAILBLAZING MR-G HANA-BASARA
Unparalleled strength and beauty befitting the pinnacle of the G-SHOCK brand.
The ultimate in metal form, created with leading-edge technology and time-honoured artisanship. This trailblazing, one-of-a-kind MR-G is designed based on the concept of Hana-Basara, a Basara commander spirit. Basara was a term of respect used for samurai commanders who shattered conventions with a rebellious style that combined strength and a bold, lavish aesthetic.
Ultra-hard COBARION and DAT55G alloys developed in Japan are employed for the bezel and bands. It is cut and polished by a skilled artisan to apply techniques rarely used in metalwork, achieving mirror-surface facet cuts in metal. This watch exudes a distinctive aesthetic sensibility and worldview that embraces two of Japan’s proudest heritages: cutting-edge technology and traditional craftsmanship.
This new limited-edition model is being introduced to mark the 25th anniversary (2021) of the top-of-the-line G-SHOCK MR-G. Its concept theme is HANA-BASARA, a term whose root is BASARA, which comes from the Sanskrit word for diamond. It has the image of breaking with commonly held beliefs and adopting fashionable and glamorous garments and behavior.
During Japan’s Period of Warring States, warlords who were particularly self-assertive were called BASARA Busho, who preferred armor with original and artistic designs, even during battles. The MR-G concept combines a unique aesthetic consciousness with all the toughness of armor. The “HANA” part of HANA-BASARA means ostentatious or brilliant, and this concept is embodied in the elegant bezel of this model. The bezel is finished by Kazuhito Komatsu, a master gem cutter who has developed an extremely complex original mirror facet metal cutting technique. He is also the creator of HANASHINJU faceted pearls.
The case, band, and back are coated with a traditional Japanese iron-colored (kurogane) DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating, which gives this model its main coloring. The iron color is a dark bluegreen color produced when armor and swords were heated during their forging. Brown ion plating (IP) is used for the case, while red molding around the face and green around the inset dials produce a calm color combination that is similar to the elegance and beauty of ancient Japanese armor. A plate on the edge of the case at 10 o’clock is engraved with 25TH LIMITED to commemorate the 25th anniversary of MR-G (2021).
The COBARION® bezel, which is about four times harder than pure titanium, is faceted by master gem cutter Kazuhito Komatsu to create a typical bezel shape. Facet cutting combines several small surfaces to maximize the transparency of a gemstone. Machining metal with this method requires a very high level of skill, and Kazuhito Komatsu was able to hand grind each bezel at a rate of only a few pieces per day.
The case and band are made of DAT55G titanium alloy, which is three times harder than pure titanium. This combines with the COBARION® bezel to provide outstanding hardness for the entire watch.
The elegance and toughness of this new limited-edition model are perfectly suited to the concept of HANA-BASARA.
The bezel employed a facet-cutting technique commonly used in gemstone arts. Cutting/polishing artisan KOMATSU Kazuhito applied crisp polishes to the many facets with their varying angles to achieve a brilliant, gleaming finish. Working with an ultra-hard alloy that is very tricky to process, kept production limited to just a few pieces per day — an intricate process that elevates this metal design to the realm of an artform.
The traditional Japanese hue kurogane-iro (literally “iron colour”) is reproduced on the bezel and band with our newly developed dark green DLC finish. A name derived from the deep shade of green that appears on the surface of iron heated to high temperatures, the colour evokes the distinguished presence of the iron-clad helmet and armour Basara samurai commanders wore.
The dial design incorporates a Kusari Katabira (chain mail) inspired woven pattern and mirror-finished components with a folding fan pattern. The index features a curved form achieved through nano processing to evoke the curvature of a Japanese sword. Adopting the Hana-Basara armour blend of green, red, gold and black hues, the watch face presents a creative design look.
Brown AIP® (arc ion plating) is applied to the DAT55G case. A plate engraved with “25th LIMITED” adorns the case side to mark the 25th anniversary of the MR-G line.

The bezel is made of COBARION®, a cobalt-chrome alloy boasting a hardness about four times that of pure titanium and said to have a more brilliant gleam than platinum. The case and band employ DAT55G, a titanium alloy with a hardness about three times that of pure titanium that offers excellent processability. With these super-hard alloys developed in Japan, we achieved an exterior design that delivers both strength with beauty.
